Gate to Moon Base Alpha:
Season One: From Phobos
to Ganymede
The Gate to Moon Base Alpha
is a performance series organized by the Philadelphia Ambient Consortium
and sponsored by the Foundation, a community culture project at the University
of Pennsylvania. The season started in October 1999 with performances held
at the Rotunda Building at 40th and Walnut Street in West Philadelphia.
Every third Friday of the month for the next eight months we paid artists,
offerred free admission, and sometimes free vegetarian food to all beings
interested in new music in Philadelphia. With three performances an evening
the schedule was very busy. The first Gate featured hour long sets by Unsound,
Ted Casterline's Perfect Pieces of Fruit, and Dominick Zappa. Over the
next 2 years, many others performed featuring the entire spectrum of new
music in Philadelphia. For most of these performances we have fantastic
recordings thanks to Andrew Zitcer and his trusty Minidisc recorder. Mp3s for each groups performance are between 40 and 60 minutes long, and are so large that they are not likely suitable for downloading. Audio streams of the shows are available for your Internet connection speed (56kbps or 300kbps).
