Meisha

The ambient/droner rawk band who created at August's Art Party 2 (groovelingo.com/artparty) an
entirely new room of sound and visuals, using their heady landscapes of overlapping tones and
wordless storytelling along with homemade films, Meisha returns to Philadelphia to play a longer
and more evocative set. Disallow song titles like "The Most Perfect Pancake" or
"Ill Chihuahua", both featured on the CD _Meisha Returns Meisha Forever_, to fool you
into taking them less seriously. Having been compared to God Speed You Black Emperor!, Porcupine
Tree, and others, Meisha produces sound that is pure ambient gone off on tangents to constantly
rotating circles. One thread of sound weaves itself dreamily through another tonal tapestry and
meets on the other side an entirely new, yet undulating, line of aural emotion. Painting heavy
sonic layers atop gentle gossamer ones, Meisha defines drone type music, armed with guitar driven
calmness, rippled sighs,
and swirling images. Each song possesses not one but four dimensions, as it glides throughout an
unspoken tale stretched tightly across the listener's mind.

Seaweed Soup

Clay Emerson of writes:

Seaweed Soup is a term used to describe the music that my friends and I create live. A lot of
people have been a part of Seaweed Soup over the years including Michael Hayde, Ian Pullman and
Clay Emerson.

It started about 3 years ago with the purchase of a $50 MX-65 keyboard. The music is an attempt to
use sound to describe feeling or emotion. Although it is based on improvisation, we aim to create a
greater message, or flow of emotion, one that is only experienced when the piece is heard in its
entirety.

We are purists that believe in the use of analog equipment, both manufactured and homemade.

A.N. Varady writes:

I love Seaweed Soup. If I could choose anyone to write the soundtrack to the re-release of Escape
to Witch Mountain (1976), it would be Seaweed Soup.

Overdrive Date Master

In early 1996 A small coffeehouse gig had been booked in advance with the idea that
"something" of a collaboration between local indie rock
musicians Wayne Hamilton and David Talento would occur. The weekend before this show was to take
place a copy of a 1976 trucking magazine
titled "Overdrive" was found and purchased while scouring an open air flea market in
Lehigh Valley, PA.. This magazine had within it's magical pages a centerfold section which
contained a full figured lass in a bikini buffing up the gleaming chrome of a giant monster truck.
Glistening in the warm sun and soapy suds the section's titled jumped off the page. This was the
"Date Master" section of Overdrive magazine. A battery operated monkey was also
purchased and it was decided that this would take center stage as the drummer for some future
project. In the car on the way back to the city, fresh batteries were put into "Binky"
the monkey and the band was born.

Overdrive Date Master has played many live shows over the years since that fateful afternoon and
released almost a dozen underground cassettes
and CDs. Some of these contained live concerts, some contained lofi recordings made on mono
handheld tape players, other's were living room jam sessions with children's toys and various
wollensac reel to reel decks, and some were even (more or less) legitimately recorded tracks made
in semi-professional home studios. Wayne and David have been augmented on stage and in the studio
by many friends and additional sound tools ranging from 8 RPM record players, broken guitars,
effects boxes, strange recording and tape playing devices, and homebrew theremins, analog synths,
as well as dozens of echos and vintage tube amplifiers. Their own tube tech, John Martin, has also
played concerts which prominently featured amps he has brought back to life or modified for
inclusion in the ODM arsenal.

Typical live shows include a mixed DJ set played on an 8RPM tube record player along with spaced
out guitar solos, synthesized basslines, and
cheesy preset drum machines. All of this is mixed with tape loops, and the occasional hint of
melody making Overdrive Date Master a fun show for the whole damn family or a great place to take
your date.

An annual ODM "Christmas Show" takes place each year, this time hosted at the Gate to
Moonbase Alpha. During this performance ODM will use
no instruments, instead relying on their vast collection of record players and obscure vinyl.
Everything from Leonard Nimoy Sings! albums to a do it yourself psychoanalysis kit have been played
at at these shows, usually at incorrect speeds and with the appropriate ODM processing and
amplification. A live album of the very first concert is now available. See what this is all about

Invasion of Time

The free improv/loop duo "Invasion of Time" (Paul Mimlitsch -WarrŪ/StickŪ/Loops and Jim
Speer-midied Stick/ Loops) take on the gate to moonbase alpha challenge. Will they open the gate
with their ritual deuling of Chapman Sticks?

Jim Speer usually plays with Unsound and Broadside Electric. Paul Mimlitsch can often be heard with
the Adelante group. This will be a rare treat indeed.

The Great Quentini

Harking from a metaverse where we humans are the size of quarks, the Great Quentini is the high
shaman of the Gate. Without him the Gate would just be another embedded hulk of exo-archaeological
curiosity. Each "act" of Quentini is actually a translation in form of Pythagoras secret
2049 laws of the higher initiate. If you can reverse engineer them, then we will surely find the
portal to the lost dimension of the lesser space poets... at least, that's what I gather from his
previous performance at last months GTMBA.

Quentin Davis will hypnotiser us with strange sounds, costumes, and other eccentricities.

WHO ARE WE?

The Philadelphia Ambient Consortium is an autonomous cabal centered in Philadelphia, PA. It was
established in 1998 to unify the city's dedicated space, ambient, psychedelic instrumental,
improvisational, drone, new classical, and experimental electronic audiophiles by providing a
centralized information resource and the kernel of a community. We hope that through this activity,
the scene may grow strong and large enough to make our work largely irrelevant. PAC(MaN) is
sponsored by the volunteer contributions of its members. While it is not technically a nonprofit
organization by U.S. law, PAC(MaN) does not seek
any gain for its organizing members. PAC(MaN) publishes the PAC(MaN) Event Update, administers the
philly_ambient@listbot discussion list, curates the
Gate to Moonbase Alpha performance series, and operates the
simpletone.com website. For more information, email spaceling@iname.com, http://simpletone.com
